Kids can start with snorkeling at a young age, try scuba in very shallow water from around 8 years old (programs like PADI Bubblemaker), and begin a Junior Open Water course from 10. Ages and rules vary by agency and dive center, so always confirm before booking.

This guide explains the steps, lists real kid-friendly programs from dive centers on Be Underwater and covers what to check for safety. It is general information and does not replace training or instructor guidance.

Age Guide: From Snorkeling to Junior Open Water

  • Snorkeling: suitable for younger children who are comfortable in the water, often from around age 5 on guided trips. Start with our snorkeling for beginners guide.
  • Bubblemaker and Scuba Rangers style programs: from around 8 years old, in a pool or very shallow water (about 2 m maximum), with an instructor close by. These are experiences, not certifications.
  • PADI Seal Team: an 8+ program of fun, aquatic missions in the pool or shallow water.
  • Junior Open Water: available from age 10. Divers aged 10 to 11 have a maximum depth of 12 m and dive with a parent, guardian or dive professional. At age 15 the certification is typically upgraded to the adult one.

For the adult course steps, read the Open Water course guide.

Safety Checklist for Families

  • Ear equalization: kids may find it harder to clear their ears. Practice in shallow water and read our guide to ear pain and how to equalize.
  • Medical questionnaire: complete it honestly. If any answer is a yes, a doctor should review it before diving.
  • Gear that fits: ask for kid-size masks, fins and wetsuits so nothing leaks or slips.
  • Instructor ratio: ask how many children one instructor supervises. Small groups are better.
  • Short, shallow dives: stay inside the age depth limits and keep dives brief.
  • Warm water: kids lose heat faster than adults, so warm water or a thicker wetsuit helps.

This checklist does not replace training. Follow the instructor's briefing and your center's rules.

FAQ: Scuba Diving for Kids

What is the minimum age for scuba diving?

Programs such as PADI Bubblemaker and similar pool or shallow-water experiences start at around 8 years old, in very shallow water. Junior Open Water certification starts at 10, with shallower depth limits for 10 and 11 year olds. Exact ages vary by agency and dive center, so confirm before you book.

Can a 10 year old get certified?

Yes. Children aged 10 and over can take a Junior Open Water course. Divers aged 10 to 11 have restricted depth limits (a maximum of 12 m) and must dive with a parent, guardian or dive professional. At age 15 the certification is usually upgraded to the standard adult one.

Is snorkeling a good start for younger kids?

Yes. Snorkeling suits younger children who are comfortable in the water, often from around age 5 depending on the trip. Many families start with snorkeling before moving on to a try dive.

What should I check before booking a kids' dive?

Confirm the minimum age, the medical questionnaire, the instructor-to-child ratio and whether gear in kid sizes is available. Also ask how long the dive is and how deep it goes.

Which destinations are best for families?

Look for calm, warm, shallow sites with short boat rides, such as Tenerife, Malta, Greece, Cyprus, Sardinia, Elba, Bali, Koh Chang, the Red Sea and Maldives family-focused dive centers.
